Muscle atrophy: A silent threat to health and longevity
Study shows link between muscle loss and risk of death in adults
Sven Mieke
Muscle atrophy, also known as sarcopenia, is a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength and typically occurs with age. However, its effects on our overall health and longevity are often overlooked. A recent study from May 20, 2023 provides a comprehensive investigation of the relationship between muscle atrophy and mortality risk in adults and highlights the crucial role of maintaining muscle health for a longer and healthier life.
The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 49 prospective studies with a total of 878,349 participants. The researchers found that muscle atrophy is associated with a higher risk of mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory diseases. Put simply, people with muscle atrophy were at higher risk of dying from these causes than people with normal muscle mass. This association was significant regardless of muscle strength, suggesting that muscle mass alone plays a critical role in determining these risks.
Interestingly, the study also found that the risk of muscle waste-related mortality was lower in studies with longer follow-up periods, suggesting that the negative effects of muscle atrophy may be alleviated over time with measures such as exercise and diet. The study concludes that identifying and treating muscle atrophy early could be key to reducing the risk of death and promoting healthy longevity.
